It’s finally happening! The Japanese borders are opening to tourists. As of Oct 11, 2022 Japan will allow visa-free, independent tourism. The current requirement of traveling with an organized tour group will be dropped, and tourists will be allowed to travel freely.

Japan was a top tourist destination in 2019, but due to the worldwide coronavirus pandemic, the borders were closed in 2020. After over two long years, the byFood team is thrilled to welcome foodies, tourists, and travelers from all over the world to Japan!

Here’s some quick info to know before traveling to Japan:

Visa Free Countries

There are 68 countries and regions that can visit Japan visa-free. This list includes the US, Canada, Australia, the UK, and New Zealand. The full list of countries can be viewed here

Entry requirements

Visitors to Japan must be fully vaccinated (three doses of approved covid vaccines) OR provide a negative PCR test before entering the country. For more information, please look over the requirements on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan official website.

Mask Wearing

Japan is still very conservative with corona prevention, so mask-wearing is the norm. Please keep in mind that you may be asked to wear a mask while visiting, especially indoors and on public transit. You can bring masks with you, or easily purchase them here at convenience, drug, and grocery stores.
